Inishowen was a hive of activity on Saturday last as groups across the Peninsula rolled up their sleeves and got to work giving their own areas a good spring clean.
Groups in Carrowmena, Moville, Greencastle, Clonmany, Quigley’s Point, Crislaghkeel, Burnfoot and Buncrana were out in force to clean up litter and rubbish lying along the roads and in towns and villages.
Pearse McCrory, Litter Warden with Donegal County Council was on hand along with Council driver Noel O’Donnell, who came along later in the day to collect the rubbish that was bagged by the local groups.
“It never ceases to amaze me the amount of rubbish that is thrown out of cars and left lying along our roadside” says Pearse McCrory. “There is no way that the Council would have the resources to keep every road and public area in the county clean, and that’s why the work that these people do is so important.”
“These people are the backbone of their communities and they should be highly commended for all the work they do. So I would ask anyone who is in a habit of throwing rubbish out of their car window, to think again, as someone is going to have to pick up this rubbish but more importantly it is endangering a natural habitat as well as creating an unsightly mess that reflects badly on everyone in the community”.
Saturday last was the designated day for the ‘Big Inishowen Clean-up’ and groups from towns and villages throughout the Peninsula took part.
“This initiative has been running for a number of years now and each year we see more and more towns and villages taking part. We are delighted with this year’s response. Volunteers come out en masse to collect litter and rubbish and the Council provides bags, pickers and high vis vests and then collects the rubbish from designated points later on in the day”.
“It is also important to acknowledge the work that is done by Tidy Towns groups throughout the year. Clonmany and Ballyliffin had their clean-up on Good Friday and Culdaff and Inch are planning their clean-ups for next Saturday the 14th April”.

It is a great way of getting to know people and having a bit of craic as well as doing something positive for your community.”
